From One Legacy to Another

From One Legacy to Another

When a beloved family member in Christ passes from this life, Scripture assures us that death is not an ending but a homegoing. The body rests, but the soul is immediately received into the presence of the Lord. Jesus Himself said, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). The Apostle Paul echoes this confidence, teaching that to be “absent from the body” is to be “present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8). For the believer, there is no wandering, no darkness, and no delay—only the nearness of Christ, peace beyond pain, and the fullness of His love.

This present reality is often called the “intermediate state,” not because it is uncertain, but because it is secure while awaiting something even greater. Our loved one is fully alive, fully known, and fully held by Jesus. They are at rest from earthly labor, sorrow, and struggle, yet awake and rejoicing in the presence of God (Revelation 14:13).

For those who remain, questions naturally arise about the future—about the Rapture, the resurrection, and judgment. Scripture offers comfort here as well. At the return of Christ, believers who have passed away will be raised in glorified bodies, reunited with their souls, and together with living believers will meet the Lord forever (1 Thessalonians 4:13–18). This is not a fearful event for those in Christ, but a promised reunion and the fulfillment of our hope.

The Great White Throne Judgment, described in Revelation 20, is often misunderstood and can cause unnecessary fear. Biblically, this judgment is directed toward those who rejected Christ, not those whose names are written in the Book of Life. Believers will not stand in condemnation, for “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Christ has already borne our judgment on the cross. What awaits the believer is not punishment, but reward, restoration, and eternal communion with God.

In this waiting period—between our goodbye and our own future reunion—we grieve, but not without hope. Love continues. Memory remains. And Christ Himself walks with us, as the Man of Sorrows who understands loss and promises resurrection. Our loved one is not lost; they are safely kept. Not gone forever; only gone ahead.

This legacy, then, is one of faith fulfilled. A life entrusted to Christ has been received by Christ. And until the day we see them again, we rest in the promise that God is faithful, death has been defeated, and eternal life has already begun.
